EXERCISE PHYSIOLOGY

Introduction to Exercise Physiology

Exercise Physiology has a long and interesting history that can be traced back to ancient cultures, across many continents starting with Hippocrates (370-460BC) who advocated moderate exercise to improve and maintain health.

A modern exercise physiologist will develop a personalised exercise program and guide you through the prescribed exercises to help prevent, manage and correct injuries.

If living life to its fullest important to you, our Exercise Physiologist, Jaime Cornwell, wants to help you: the locals of Pakenham, Officer, Beaconsfield, Berwick, Bunyip and surrounding areas.

If you are in pain, are injured or have a specific condition that requires exercise our exercise physiologist is here to help!

Conditions treated with Exercise Physiology

Exercise Physiologists treat and manage a wide range of conditions and common health complaints. Exercise Physiology helps treat people suffering from:

  • Chronic diseases – such as arthritis, cardiovascular disease, obesity
  • Chronic Respiratory diseases – asthma
  • Balance improvement and fall prevention
  • Musculoskeletal imbalances resulting in lower back pain, knee pain, hip pain, shoulder pain etc.
  • Neurological conditions – such as anxiety and depression, Parkinson’s and PTSD
  • Post-surgery rehabilitation
  • Risk factor management – dietary education, physical activity levels
  • Sports related injuries
  • Cancer (see ABC TV Catalyst story here http://www.abc.net.au/catalyst/stories/4459555.htm)

Benefits of Exercise Physiology

Nicolas Andry, a professor of medicine at the University of Paris, sums it up perfectly in his book ‘Orthopaedia: or The Art of Correcting and Preventing Deformities in Children’ (published 1743):

“Of all the methods proper for preserving health, and for preventing, and even curing a great number of diseases, there is none equal to moderate exercise. Exercise is much more effectual than medicines for the preservation of health.”

Continuous research supports that exercise is as effective as pain medication (with fewer side effects!) and helps with:

  • Reduced pain and fatigue
  • Increased muscle strength
  • Improved balance and range of joint movement
  • Prevention of loss of muscle fibres
  • Reduced stiffness and swelling in joints
  • Improved wellbeing and physical function

If you’re tired of pain and lacking motivation, come and see our experienced and professional team for an exercise program that’s perfect for you! EXERCISE IS MEDICINE!

What to expect at your first visit

It’s understandable to be a little nervous if it’s your first encounter with Exercise Physiology, especially if you don’t know what to expect. And if your pain is injury related, it’s normal to be a little apprehensive when starting up fitness related activities again.

We can assure you that your first appointment won’t consist of army style routines with a stern sergeant screaming abuse for motivation! Jaime conducts individual sessions and designs exercise programs to suit each person, her gentle encouragement – perhaps attributed to her study and teaching of Pilates – will put you at ease straight away. You can view available classes here.

Your initial consultation will include a basic assessment of your condition and exercise tolerance.

And as well as exploring your past exercise programs and results, we’ll discuss your current lifestyle, what changes you wish to make and what goals you want to achieve. We’ll also take a range of physical measurements, which may include height, weight, blood pressure, flexibility and strength testing.

Achieve optimal health and wellbeing. Don’t wait until its too late!
